Press Alt + Space and Gemini Appears—But What Can It Really See?

Say you're writing an email on your PC and want help making it friendlier. You search Gemini app for Windows Alt Space how it works, but one question stops you: if Gemini pops up over your email, can it read everything on the screen?

The short answer is reassuring: opening Gemini over another program is not the same as giving it automatic access to that program. You still choose what to type, paste, upload, or connect.

Install it from the one place you can trust

The most useful step comes first: type gemini.google/desktop into your browser yourself. That is Google's official download page. Avoid “download” buttons in ads, emails, or unfamiliar websites.

Save and open GeminiSetup.exe, follow the installation prompts, then launch Gemini from the Windows Start menu and sign in to your Google Account. It works with personal accounts and eligible work or school accounts whose administrator allows Gemini.

Google says you need Windows 10 or newer, at least 8 GB of memory, 200 MB of free storage, and an internet connection. That 8 GB requirement is worth checking if an older PC refuses to cooperate; it may be a hardware limit, not something you clicked wrong.

What Alt + Space actually does

Pressing Alt + Space opens a small Gemini window over the program you're using. It saves you from hunting for a browser tab, but it does not turn every item on your screen into a question automatically.

Ask for a dinner idea, brainstorm a birthday message, or paste in a paragraph and request a shorter version. You can also upload an image for Gemini to analyze. As with any AI answer, double-check names, dates, and other important details before using them.

Can it read Gmail, Drive, or your screen?

Gemini can pull information from Google services such as Gmail or Drive only when you use a supported connection and give the needed permission. A connected app simply means another service you have chosen to let Gemini work with.

Google's Windows help page describes typing questions, drafting, summarizing, and uploading images. It does not say the app silently reads every open window just because the Gemini panel is sitting on top. For something private, share only the small portion you actually need help with.

If you do connect Google services, our guides to Gemini's Daily Brief and Personal Intelligence in Google's AI Mode explain the tradeoff in plain English. You may also want to review which devices are signed into your ChatGPT account—the same good habit applies to any AI account.

If the shortcut does nothing

Open Gemini from the Start menu first and make sure you're signed in. Google says available updates appear as a notice in the lower-right corner of the app; choose Restart to update when you see one.

If Alt + Space still fails, another Windows utility may already use that key combination. You can keep opening Gemini from Start while you sort out the conflict.

That's really it: one trusted download, one handy shortcut, and you stay in charge of what you share.
